Last week Judge Sarah Singleton issued a ruling that the constitutional rights of at-risk public schools students in New Mexico have been violated due to inadequate funding. Today Hannah Colton invited her KUNM listeners and panel of guests to talk about “How New Mexico Is Failing To Educate At-Risk Students.”
I shot out an email while State Senator John Arthur Smith was on the line, noting that diverse advanced and gifted students too may be at-risk, and that funding for their services existed but lacked earmarking for accountability. Senator Smith seemed to suggest that, though districts preferred to maintain autonomy when it comes to using their distributions of operational funding, they may need some oversight in this responsibility of funding gifted education. Have a listen and let me know what you think.
