• Who should be served by gifted education?
  • How many of New Mexico’s students should be served?
  • To what extent should the identified gifted population represent our schools’ diversity?
  • What kind of services should schools offer?
  • What sorts of needs should gifted education meet?
  • Should gifted education continue to be part of special education?
  • What instructional practices should be normative for gifted ed?
  • What support should we receive from the PED and from NMAG?
  • How should we evaluate our gifted education programs?

During the months of February, March and April 2020, the Public Education Department, the New Mexico Association for the Gifted and its affiliates (South Central and Four Corners), and Santa Fe Public Schools Services for Advanced and Gifted Education will hold a stakeholder input meeting to accumulate input for making next steps in improving gifted education in New Mexico. Questions like these will likely be raised.

We are looking for parents, teachers, administrators and other professionals working with our gifted students to come together and discuss and make recommendations on:

1) identification and representation;
2) program design and service delivery
3) curriculum and instruction for gifted students

The work session will run from 8:30 AM to 4:00 PM. Registered participants will receive and be expected to read in advance peer reviewed research or policy documents to guide discussions. Recommendation from all three meetings will be synthesized and shared with all participants. Final recommendations will guide the NM-PED and NMAG and its affiliates as to “Next Steps” in meeting the needs and improving outcomes for our students who are gifted.
