Parents of gifted students often have concerns and questions about advocating for their students to ensure that appropriate, quality services are being provided to their children.
The New Mexico Association for the Gifted would like to introduce our moderated blog about the advocacy process in New Mexico.

My gifted son was diagnosed last year with cancer, and we had to have him identified with a health plan so he could receive at-home education.
We argued at the IEP meeting that he should have a gifted teacher provide his at-home services because he was already so far ahead of grade-level instruction.
Our school district agreed with us, and our son received gifted services while he underwent his treatments.
I was amazed at how well the entire process went, and it really began with us clearly stating what we wanted. Once the school knew what we wanted, they gave it to us.

My son was diagnosed with Autism at age 2 and a half. I was wondering if anyone has had trouble finding the right school to teach there kids. It was very hard to find a teacher for my child that knows about Autism. We found the best teacher finally but he is leaving the school my son is attending. So now I start all over again to find a school that wants to teach my child. Most of the Teachers I have talked to at the special needs classes at the schools know nothing about Autism. Its hard because he needs a special needs program, he is not ready to go into an inclusion class full time yet. Does anyone have any input on this? Please help. Thank You

I am very concerned about changes in gifted services at Albuquerque Public schools.
1.Gifted Middle School teachers are required to recertify yearly by taking a three week summer course. On top of that the teachers have not even been properly notified and this is the last week of classes!
2. Albuquerque Public Schools seems to be trying to remove the differentiation between B level and C level students which was clearly delineated by a standard score. C level was 145 and above while B level was 130 and above. Now diagnosticians are not required to include the IQ score on IEPs and children who are tested first with APS and later privately are not having their higher private scores reviewed. The insinuation is that all diagnostics at APS are perfect which is pure arrogance.

My son has been homeschooled until this year when he decided he wanted to try school. He *hates* school and is certain his teacher hates him. She has started threatening to remove him from GATE (our Gifted program). Someone recently informed me that she does not have the authority to remove him from GATE, and that since he qualified for gifted education, and has an IEP, that his teacher cannot legally remove him from services.

Does anyone know if this is true?

I will be moving into the ALBQ area for a new job and will be coming from a wonderful charter school for my 8 year old daughter that catered to gifted and motivated students. i am wondering what are the options for a gifted and/or advanced and differentiated learning environment in the ALBQ area?

Thank you
